Placemaking is about paying particular attention to the little details and attributes that transform everyday SPACES into PLACES that people want to go to and return to time and time again.
There is a fine distinction between 'SPACES' and 'PLACES' which is at the core of Placemaking. Spaces are merely somewhere you must go to do something or meet someone. Places, on the other hand, are where you can still do that, but there is more to it; it is somewhere you WANT to go, where you WANT to return to, and most importantly, a Place where you have a feeling of community, purpose, acceptance - a sense of ‘home’ or belonging.
Online retailing, social media, and the rise of remote work cultures are unavoidably disrupting the traditional brick-and-mortar world - be it a small community mall to a street or precinct or city-wide planning - Placemaking is about creating safe experiences and enhancing human interactions both amongst themselves and with the surrounding environment. It is entirely intentional and rarely happens on its own (at least not in new developments or re-developed areas); rather, like a great piece of art, it is planned from its first sketches and executed to make a vision come to life.
Placemaking is about People First; it’s about creating connections between people and the environment around us and how we can all work together to transform our public spaces into places. It does not require a ton of investment, extensive public works, and construction, overbearing technology, or gimmicks; there are no required bells and whistles - all you need is an attitude and a methodology that puts the end-user first and provides an environment for human interactions to take place safely and comfortably.
“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” - African Proverb
Well, a few years back, our founder realized that many times a brief review of a project or discussion of a problem with a trusted friend or a mentor would result in a more actionable and feasible solution than spending weeks or months trying to solve the problem on his own or through the standard engagement of traditional consulting firms. The problem was how to find a mentor with experience in a variety of different fields and with diverse experience to be applied to the complex implementation of successful Placemaking?
After decades in our industry and having worked on projects spanning the globe, we began discussing alternative solutions to top-heavy consulting engagements, inflated fees, and lengthy delivery times, and hence, Crimson Placemaking was born.
Often, all that is needed is a focused and concise view of a project or a specific problem rather than a protracted and drawn-out consulting and evaluation process. By using 'MicroConsulting' guidelines, Crimson can act as an advisor for the duration of a project, during critical stages, or on a limited-time basis to provide high-level solutions to specific/focused problems and issues.
“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” - Anne Frank
"We can build systems to engage people, but until we figure out why they aren't engaged and using the public spaces that they already have today, nothing will change." - Madison Mayor Paul Soglin on low-income communities and public space.
We believe that if you give your time and effort to the community - the community will give back to you!
At Crimson Placemaking, we are passionate about creating and curating the best public spaces and areas. We believe that any development, district, or city will benefit from enhanced public works and that healthy and vibrant public engagement is the cornerstone of a thriving community. Our global know-how and expertise will ensure that you are advised on the latest trends and successes from around the globe.
What is MicroConsulting?
MicroConsulting is a short burst of work focused on a specific topic or requirement, priced to your budget and delivered and acted upon within weeks or days, depending on your needs. We view it as a quick and strategic means to supplement your team with specific expertise or intellectual horsepower.
What are the benefits?
We see consulting as evolving to provide short bursts of specific work that can be delivered in weeks or days rather than months and can best be utilized to supplement your existing strategies and approach. Gone are the days of the 100-page PowerPoint presentations and reports, and many times, there’s no need for a full-fledged consulting team with high overheads and long delivery times. Instead, companies need 1 or 2 individuals or a small, dedicated team of people who can work with management to focus on a specific issue or find alternate solutions. MicroConsulting results in project turnarounds of weeks instead of months, and deliverables are targeted to be implemented immediately. They are ‘boiled down’ to actionable and achievable short and long-term goals.
